Results are in from the Sun and Elements regions in the Weather Channel’s Weather Song Tournament, and MMN was gratified to see some of her picks win the popular vote. Others didn’t, but that’s okay… I know I teeter between contrarianism and finger-on-the-pulse hipness!
Now, it’s time to look at the contestants in the Rain Region!

- Gene Kelly: “Singin’ in the Rain” vs. Blind Melon: “No Rain“
This is a puzzling matchup — I’m reminded of Bambi meets Godzilla. I can’t think of any song that could seriously rival this iconic performance, but “Raindrops Keep Fallin’ on My Head” might’ve been at least plausible.
MMN’s pick: Gene Kelly: “Singin’ in the Rain”
- The Carpenters: “Rainy Days and Mondays” vs. Eddie Rabbitt: “I Love a Rainy Night“
Both of these are a bit gushy for my taste, but the Carpenters’ song really captures the feeling of a dreary day, so it’s my pick.
MMN’s pick: The Carpenters: “Rainy Days and Mondays”
- The Eurythmics: “Here Comes The Rain Again” vs. Neil Sedaka: “Laughter in the Rain“
Another oddball pairing. I like both songs, but they are suited to totally different moods. I’m going with the Eurythmics, because Annie Lennox is awesome.
MMN’s pick: The Eurythmics: “Here Comes The Rain Again”
- The Fortunes: “Here Comes That Rainy Day Feeling Again” vs. B.J. Thomas: “Raindrops Keep Fallin’ On My Head“
Aha, there’s that song I mused about above… That thing is catchy! I’m still glad it didn’t go up against Gene Kelly, though.
MMN’s pick: B.J. Thomas: “Raindrops Keep Fallin’ On My Head”
- James Taylor: “Fire and Rain” vs. Garbage: “Only Happy When It Rains“
I wore a lot of black in high school.
MMN’s pick: Garbage: “Only Happy When It Rains”
- Prince: “Purple Rain” vs. Bruce Hornsby & the Range: “Mandolin Rain“
Both have an anthem-like quality to them, but the Prince song makes me want to hold up my iPhone lighter more. As much as I like the mandolin...
MMN’s pick: Prince: “Purple Rain”
- Adele: “Set Fire to the Rain” vs. Creedence Clearwater Revival: “Who’ll Stop the Rain“
I don’t think this Adele song showcases her voice as well as others, so I’m going old-school here. I expect I’ll be in the minority!
MMN’s pick: Creedence Clearwater Revival: “Who’ll Stop the Rain”
- The Weather Girls: “It’s Raining Men” vs. Creedence Clearwater Revival: “Have You Ever Seen the Rain?“
Sure, it’s kitschy as all get-out, but that’s why I love it!
MMN’s pick: The Weather Girls: “It’s Raining Men”
Hmm, looks like I picked the wrong CCR song — Adele is currently down in the voting, but the Weather Girls are, too. Oh well, I’m comfortable on the fringe!
