NaBloPoMo Day 19!
Well, rats! :grr:
I wanted to write my review of Mahler’s 9th today, and it occurred to me that it would be great if I could listen to a recording while following a score. So I bopped around two counties to see if I could lay my hands on the needed materials… getting a CD was no problemo (I decided against iTunes — I’m not an audiophile in general, but I decided I wanted a better-than-mp3 format for this), but the score proved elusive. One library had to retrieve it from storage, which took more time than I could wait, and the other is closed on Mondays (I keep forgetting that — I tend to crave library books on Mondays, why is that? 😛 ). I couldn’t even buy it! I called every music store in my county!
The truth is, I could write just from listening to the score. But there are so many cool solos in the piece — Mahler really gets his money’s worth from his huge wind and brass sections — and I wanted to lay eyes on them.
And then this evening, I had to watch the Dancing With the Stars final competition! Yeah, go ahead and and laugh… that reminds me, one of these days I’ll have to write about why I like DWTS but really don’t care for American Idol. 😛
Anyway… I’ll get back to Mahler tomorrow. By the way, McDoc and I are fast closing in on our first anniversary! 😀 And Mahler’s music played a role in our courtship. Stay tuned for the rest of the story! 🙂
