I must confess, I’m just not a Parrothead.
MMN’s pick: Bing Crosby: “White Christmas”
- Eddie Cochran: “Summertime Blues” vs. Bananarama: “Cruel Summer“
That Eddie Cochran song has always struck me as goofy, and not in the good kinda way (The Who’s version is much better). On the other hand, the Bananarama song takes itself a bit too seriously… but they have an excuse — it was the 80s.

- Don Henley: “The Boys of Summer” vs. Terry Jacks: “Seasons in the Sun“
One of my guilty pleasures is old Eagles songs, but the later solo efforts of its members never did anything for me.
My sister and I used to sing “Seasons in the Sun,” long before I was old enough to have the slightest inkling what the heck it was about. Listening to it now, I must say it still doesn’t make much sense, but it’s my sentimental pick anyway.

- Simon & Garfunkel: “Hazy Shade of Winter” vs. Burl Ives: “Winter Wonderland“
This is a tough one — both songs are great. I have to give the edge to “Winter Wonderland,” though — another sentimental pick that McDoc and I sing to each other every holiday season.

- Frank Sinatra: “Summer Wind” vs. Ella Fitzgerald/Louis Armstrong: “Summertime“
Oh hell no! This is almost as painful as Stevie vs. Louis! The choice is clear, though — sorry, Mr. Chairman.

- Mungo Jerry: “In The Summertime” vs. Sly & the Family Stone: “Hot Fun in the Summertime“
I’m going with the funk on this one. “In The Summertime” is a classic, but it’s got this irritating way of making me want to hit myself in the face with a pillow — in rhythm.

- Kenny Chesney: “Summertime” vs. The Lovin’ Spoonful: “Summer in the City“
The melody of Kenny Chesney’s song keeps going up and landing on the same note over and over. (It’s an E, for those of you playing along at home.) My composition teachers would’ve looked askance.
I dig the vintage keyboard sounds in “Summer in the City,” and as an added bonus, it uses car horn sound effects, similar to George Gershwin’s An American in Paris. MMN approves!

- U2: “Indian Summer Sky” vs. Seals & Crofts: “Summer Breeze“
I love U2, but this is far from my favorite song of theirs. I would have to go with Seals & Crofts in any case — the song uses toy piano!
